The Segulot/Uses of Tehillim/Psalms 21-64

25/3/2018

This is a continuation of the list of uses/segulot for each Tehillim as per the Chida (I'm pretty sure).

However, the PDF download contains all 64 up-to-date. Eventually, all of them will appear together in just one post. Right now, I'm doing them gradually because it ends up being close to 180 if you include the 20-something perakim within Chapter 119.

For the first 20, please see HERE (or press the button below to download all 64 on 1 page).
For Tehillim/Psalms ailment list, please see HERE.
___________

22 -- for every kind of trouble (tzaar)

Associations with various situations are not evident. Why would the Chida make these associations? I was looking at one specifically and frankly couldn't sense an internal link between the plight of the poor husband and the words of the Psalm ( 45 - not for me!!!). Can you? And if not, then WHY the linkage???

Hi, DS!

It's an important question that sheds more light on Tehillim as a whole.

The general answer is that the imagery in Tehillim always contains deeper meanings beyond the literal meaning. (Probably you already knew that, but this is also for readers who are hearing this idea for the first time.) For example, the wars mentioned throughout also allude to the internal war we have with our yetzer hara. This includes the Tehillim which name specific nations or generals; these are also metaphors for deeper issues.

And regarding this specific Tehillim #45:
First of all, there is the idea in Chazal that if a man really wants to avoid Gehinnom, he should marry an evil/bad wife and this suffering will atone for all his sins. However, the same tzaddikim who mention this idea in theory also recommend against doing so in practice because it is such a difficult nisayon, most men would not be able to make it through. To complicate things, men are halachically obligated to both honor and love their wives, something that is very challenging to fulfill when she is awful.

So this Tehillim 45 opens with the words "a song of endearment," which very much fits in with a man's obligation toward his wife even when she is "ra'ah." Then it speaks of a man who is "beautiful beyond other men, charm is poured upon your lips, therefore God has blessed you for an eternity." This very much fits in with the idea of avoiding Gehinnom and getting an express ticket to Gan Eden ("God has blessed you for eternity"), the precise idea behind granting a man an "ishah ra'ah" -- and evil wife.

Then there is a lot of beautiful imagery throughout. I don't know the deeper meanings behind most of it, but in general, references to a princess indicate one's soul.

It ends with a very nice promise that a man (or any suffering spouse) might find very reassuring.

Wow, Myrtle Rising, this was a beautiful answer. I have one specific man in mind who has a miserable nasty wife - and one of his friends has an even worse wife! - I will show him this comment of yours on occasion; maybe he will be cheered up and will appreciate his 'good fortune" ( lo aleinu!).

Thank you and have a wonderful Pessach.

Baruch Hashem, our Chachamim have given us keys to understanding Torah & advice for utilizing it. The more I learn, the luckier I feel to be a Jew.

Having a miserable nasty spouse is one of the most frustrating and demoralizing nisayons. It's a big relief that he has your support and I hope that the Tehillim helps him and his friend in a revealed manner.

Thank you and may you also have a wonderful Pesach!
