The Full List of Segulot/Uses for All of Tehillim/Psalms

14/6/2018

A while back, this blog compiled a list of the Chida's segulot/uses for each chapter of Tehillim, but 119 was left out due to the need to list the verses for each segulah. I kept putting it off because it seemed like a lot of work in my mind, but then I encountered a particularly large and scary fast-moving spider.

After spraying it to death, I thought about the message of the spider.

In Perek Shirah, the smamit is often translated as a spider. (It is also translated as some kind of small lizard.) Either way, the smamit sings Tehillim 150:5:
הַלְלוּהוּ בְצִלְצְלֵי-שָׁמַע;    הַלְלוּהוּ, בְּצִלְצְלֵי תְרוּעָה
HalleluHu b'tziltzelei shama; halleluHu b'tziltzelei truah
Praise Him with loud-sounding cymbals; praise Him with clanging cymbals.
  • Metzudat David says tziltzalim (cymbals) produce a sound that travels far.

  • Malbim says that teruah (trumpeting) represents fear of punishment (yirat onesh), but this fear will be mixed with joy.

  • The Metsudah Tehillim references Rav Shimshon Raphael Hirsch's commentary, which explains that these cymbals produce an extremely loud sound meant to call large groups to "attentive participation" in praising Hashem.

And what better way to praise Hashem than through Tehillim?

So I thought maybe it was a nudge to get my act together and finish this list.

And guess what? Sorting out the rest of 119 wasn't difficult at all. Anyway, I'd already done most of it for the list of Tehillim for various ailments. So I don't know what I was thinking.

If you want to know more about the segulot, please see previous posts:
A List of Specific Tehillim for Different Ailments of Body and Soul
Update on the Source for Tehillim Segulot/Uses
To download the entire list as a PDF, please press here:
List of 150 Tehillim Segulot/Uses
If you haven't downloaded it already, here is the list of the Tehillim that applies to specific ailments (please press the button):
Tehillim Ailment List
Please remember that all these chapters are good and holy, so if for example you meant to say the chapter for your right ear and you end up saying the chapter for the right nostril instead, that's okay. Both beg Hashem for mercy from pursuers and both affirm Hashem's compassion and loving-kindness.

So here's the full list:

Shalom Myrtle,

thank you for this complete list for how one can use the Psalms for various things.

Just need to know,- is it all right to kill with sprays or 'stomp' on spiders or such creepy crawly creatures?

Recently i too sprayed a spider, feeling guilty ... as i watched its legs fold up and give up its 'ghost'.(?) um... doubt they have one... or do they...??

I wish you : Shabbat Shalom, and Hashem bless you and yours, Amen.

Hi, Stella,

I believe that according to the Arizal, it's best to avoid killing any living creature as much as possible. Because of this, my husband always insists on waving things out or chucking them out in a dustpan or a cup.

However, technically it's not forbidden to kill such things (especially if it's possibly dangerous, poisonous or whatever). So it's best to avoid it, but if you're screaming and there is no hardy soul around to get rid of it more mercifully, it's okay to use Raid.

Here is the exact law:

("Spiders in halachah" -- who knew? ;-)

Thank you!

Oops, Stella, I forgot to answer your other question:

All living things possess a nefesh, but a only a human possesses a human nefesh. An animal possesses an animal nefesh and a plant possesses a plant nefesh. An insect possesses an insect nefesh.

So yes, you were seeing a lifeforce leave the body of the spider , but not a lifeforce comparable to that of a human being.

Thank you.

The following is based on a reply salvaged from a post that got deleted.

The original question is a really good one that many people ask, regarding how a specific chapter of Tehillim relates to a specific situation.

For example, the original question asked why Tehillim 45 is good for an evil wife. On the surface, it didn't seem relate to that at all.

The answer is as follows:

It's an important question that sheds more light on Tehillim as a whole.

The general answer is that the imagery in Tehillim always contains deeper meanings beyond the literal meaning.

For example, the wars mentioned throughout also allude to the internal wars we have with our yetzer hara.

This idea of an internal war includes the Tehillim which name specific nations or generals; these are also metaphors for deeper issues.

And regarding specifically Tehillim #45:

First of all, there is the idea in Chazal that if a man really wants to avoid Gehinnom, he should marry an evil/bad wife and this suffering will atone for all his sins.

However, the same tzaddikim who mention this idea in theory also recommend against doing so in practice because it is such a difficult nisayon.

Most men would not be able to endure it with the proper attitude & behavior.

To complicate things, men are halachically obligated to both honor and love their wives, something that is very challenging when she is awful.

So this Tehillim 45 opens with the words "a song of endearment," which very much fits in with a man's obligation toward his wife even when she is "ra'ah."

Then it speaks of a man who is "beautiful beyond other men, charm is poured upon your lips, therefore God has blessed you for an eternity."

Rashi interprets it:
"You are more handsome than [other] men: who engage in the work of transitory life. Why? Because charm is poured into your lips to instruct according to the halachah...And what is their reward? 'The Lord shall bless His people with peace'.”

So we see the ideal focus of the man, which leads to Hashem blessing him with peace—exactly what you need when trapped with a bad spouse.

This very much fits in with the idea of avoiding Gehinnom and getting an express ticket to Gan Eden ("God has blessed you for eternity") — the precise idea behind granting a man an "ishah ra'ah" (an evil wife).

There is a lot of beautiful imagery throughout this Tehillim.

I don't know the deeper meanings behind most of it, but in general, references to a princess indicate one's soul.

It ends with a very nice promise that a man (or any suffering spouse) might find very reassuring:
"Instead of your forefathers will be your sons; you shall appoint them as princes throughout the land."

This Tehillim along with Rashi's interpretation can be found here:
